In addition, Roland provided Construction Administration Services, which included coordination with the Testing Lab/Geotechnical Engineer (Whitaker Lab & Engineering), PEMB Shop Drawings, Site Visits, Meetings, etc. This was a fast-track Project and was completed in February 2022.

HERTFORD, NORTH CAROLINA-HISTORIC BUILDINGS:

Roland is currently working on several Buildings in Downtown Hertford, North Carolina, including the Theatre, Hardware Store, Bank Building, Car Repair Shop, and Warehouse. Other Hertford Projects to follow.

KOPPERS-DRIP PAD ADDITION, NEWSOMS, VIRGINIA:

Roland completed Contract Documents for the design of a new Drip Pad at the Koppers-Newsoms Site. Our Scope included Drawings; Schematic Drawings for the Building Manufacturer; Project Management; and coordination between Koppers, Contractor (MEB), and various SubContractors. In addition, Roland provided Construction Administration Services, which included coordination with the Testing Lab/Geotechnical Engineer (McCallum), PEMB Shop Drawings, Site Visits, Meetings, etc.  This was a fast-track Project and was completed in March 2021.

ROAD TRIP-SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2019:

Roland and Diana went "on the road again" with a little work and lots of fun in the sun.  We completed a Project in mid-September in Vidalia, Georgia for a Wood Treating Facility that included Subpart W Inspection and Hoist, Lanyard and Pushbar Certifications, as well as a Project at the first part of October in Tarrytown, Florida that included a Subpart W Inspection.

After a few weeks of fun/sun in Sarasota, Sanibel, and Ft. Myers Beach, we headed to Mississippi and then completed a Subpart W Inspection Project in Louisiana. After some fun stops in Memphis and Nashville, we met Mike and Matt in Gatlinburg for some "mountain fun" and then a Drip Pad Project in Sweetwater, Tennessee...its always fun to mix business with pleasure!:-)

ELIZABETH MANOR GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

(circa 1948)

PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA

Roland has completed multiple Projects at this Site, including an inspection of the Clubhouse to determine whether the structure can be renovated or if it should be demolished; Contract Documents for renovations to the Clubhouse; and Contract Documents for a Deck addition.

BOISSEVAIN AVENUE RESIDENCE

(circa 1919)

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA

Roland worked with Commonwealth Preservation Group on this Project, which included a Structural Report of the structural issues at this Boissevain Avenue Residence, as well as Sketches. The Residence is a masonry and timber structure that is physically connected to an adjacent residence with a commonly shared and owned party wall between the two (2) structures. Our research revealed that the Building was built over or adjacent to a ravine that was part of the Ghent Area topography prior to the 1920’s. Prior to the 1920’s, the Ghent Area included an Elizabeth River shoreline that protruded deep into the Ghent Area. Our research included a Map that shows the area prior to the 1920’s and shows this Building directly over a ravine. This resulted in some houses being built on structural sound soil substrate and others on poorly compacted fill installed over organics. Those built over fill and organics were subject to extensive differential settlement causing problems with the floors and the walls. This Residence falls into this category.

KADESH A.M.E. ZION CHURCH

(circa 1897)

EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA

This Gothic Revival style church was built in 1897 by a member of the famous Edenton Badham family of carpenters (Hannibal Badham, Jr.). The Church is one of the oldest Church buildings of African American heritage still standing in North Carolina. Martin Luther King, as well as other prominent Dignitaries, have spoken at this Church. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel caused a flood of water four feet deep that surged around the foundation of the building and rendered the church unsafe for use. The Congregation has spent years (since 2003) applying for various Grants that would help save the historic structure. Throughout this process, metal bracing was utilized to stabilize the structure temporarily. In 2017, Roland was hired to determine the feasibility of and approximate cost of restoring the Church. This required a thorough inspection of the existing foundation masonry, the timber floor framing, stud walls, and roof trusses. The next Phase of this Project completed by Roland included Contract Documents for the required repairs, including the replacement of damaged structural members, reinforcement of members, and connections and restoration of finishes. Roland worked with the Church, Edenton Historic Commission, and the National Trust.

SLEDGE & BARKLEY BUILDING

(circa 1895)

LAWRENCEVILLE, VIRGINIA

Roland completed Phase 1 of this Project, which included a Structural Inspection, Preliminary Analysis, and Schematic Sketches to assist in Pricing Alternatives for the use of the Building. This Building will be one of the first buildings restore as part of a Downtown Lawrenceville Revitalization. The Sledge & Barkley Building has a basement and three (3) stories, plus an additional two (2) story building slightly connected. The four (4) Story building was built circa 1895, and according to the DHR Report dated May 12, 2000, the Sledge & Barkley Building was the second brick building in town (other than the Courthouse and Clerk’s Office); with the first being the Bostick Building being built in 1880. The oldest building in Lawrenceville that retained its original name and site is the Sledge & Barkley Building. The original building was a two (2) story above the basement; however, due to success of the business, a third floor was added, and a brick warehouse was added to the rear. The Owners intend on restoring/renovating the Building with Retail/Commercial on the First Floor, Residential Apartments and Office on the Second Floor, and Residential Apartments on the Third Floor. The Basement will house swing space for the Retail on the first floor. The warehouse will be used for Storage. Once this Project moves forward, Phase 2 will include full Contract Documents for the restoration/renovation of this Building. Part of the restoration will include the installation of beams and columns in the basement of the Main Building to increase the flexibility of the first floor.

BARRIER ISLANDS CENTER - KITCHEN BUILDING

(circa 1725 and 1840)

MACHIPONGO, VIRGINIA

Roland has completed numerous Projects at the Barrier Islands Center over the years, and he is currently working with Barrier Islands Center, Commonwealth Preservation Group, and DHR on the Kitchen. The Kitchen is a freestanding structure built in two (2) halves; the east half built circa 1725 and the west half built circa 1840. Roland just completed a Full Structural Report with Sketches, as well as the development of a Crack Monitoring Program. Roland investigated a large vertical crack at one corner and numerus horizontal cracks. The investigation revealed a large tree rooted at the vertical crack and deterioration of the bottom of the wall at the 1725 half of the building. The Crack Monitors were utilized for this area of the building, and the Structural Report was updated with results/findings.

BARRIER ISLANDS CENTER - MAIN BUILDING/MUSEUM

(circa 1804)

MACHIPONGO, VIRGINIA

Roland recently completed a Structural Report for the Foundation Walls, First Floor Framing, and Northwest Fireplace of the Main Building/Museum at Barrier Islands Center. His investigation revealed a deteriorated brick and mortar at 5% of the wall area (and up to 100% in some isolated areas). Roland worked with Commonwealth Preservation Group on the development of a Moisture Study to determine the source of water that is deteriorating the brick. The results of this Moisture Study will be used when Roland develops the Contract Documents, which is the next Phase of this Project.

DROMGOOLE HOUSE

(circa 1786)

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA

Roland is about to begin work on this Project with Commonwealth Preservation Group, which includes the preparation of a Historic Structures Report (“HSR”), the accompanying detailed Cost Estimate of the required rehabilitation, and completion of Schematic Design.
